2007 to be the warmest year, steaming lonely planet crying for help: Are you prepared?
Scientists have predicted that 2007 will be the warmest year yet, but does it really mean anything to a common person? Are we really concerned and prepared? No, not really!

Apparently, the question is not of arming ourselves to combat it, perhaps, it’s all about making efforts to make this irreversible change reversible. And this is what we’re not doing. The urgency is rising with the rising mercury and has in fact saturated our minds. However, the irony is that despite all decades of blabber we haven’t saturated ourselves with ‘efforts to bring it down‘.

No doubt, we’re using eco-friendly products, making best efforts to cut emissions, but we’re blind to the all other factors, like rising population, more and more vehicles on roads, industrialization, unfortunately, fast paced development with no environmental concerns, that are diluting these efforts.

While some might attribute 2007 being the warmest year to the El Nino process, I feel it is a backlash of global warming.

Natural processes taking place on the earth make it warmer, these include volcanic eruptions, solar activity and the greenhouse effect.

In the last few years, our planet has witnessed a tremendous rise in temperatures, fueled both by the greenhouse effect and by human activity. The problem is that man is adding to and changing the levels of the gases responsible for the greenhouse effect and is therefore enhancing this warming. Emissions by cars, burning of fossil fuels by industries and utilities have increased over the years.

Is this the end of the last ice age?

• Glaciers are melting faster
• There are changes in the pattern and amount of rainfall
• There is a rise in sea level.
• Floods, droughts, hurricanes and Tsunamis have become more frequent and are on the rise
• Flora and fauna, which are interlinked, are severely hit: Destruction of certain species because of the loss of habitat for instance polar bears, death of giant squids.
•Damage to Coral reefs.
•Spread of diseases: increase in Asthma, Lyme disease, rising incidences of influenza, allergies are a few examples amongst others.

Everybody is aware that the earth is warming up but how can every single person help?

• Share technology and resources instead of fighting wars for them.
• Where ever possible, go for purer energy such as wind, solar and wave power
• Use bio-fuels
• Join a car pool or use public transport and the best alternative would be to cycle or walk to work, it will also keep you fit.
•Insulate your houses to lessen the amount of electricity used to heat it. Construct houses with recycled materials and energy efficient designs
•Switch off that extra light, use energy saving bulbs like LEDs.
•Make sure you close the tap when not needed and that it does not drip.
•Recycle, it takes effort and energy to make every small thing you use, so use it well

The Kyoto protocol, EU regulations and other efforts are not being able to make the mark that they should have, the need of the hour is that every person should make global warming his personal agenda and make genuinely sincere efforts to save the planet. While man is spending millions on armament, he is ignoring the obvious evidence of degradation of the planet that sustains him.

This emerging problem could only be meted out by dipping reliance on fossil fuels by switching to other sources of energy that do less harm to the environment. Also we may protect the world’s remaining forests by encouraging reforestation. In addition, there must be complete elimination of the use of halo carbons like chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs, and related chemicals.

Good work, Dear...Most of the times..I was reading the articles that laid emphasis on the global warming only but you have done a good job by highlighting the points too that could do some positive. But the pity is that a very few people might be implementing such things in reality.

It’s the high time that all of us should opt for environment-friendly products and yes, I thing recycling is the very best way to make the best possible use of available resources.

Pooja, Your point of spurring reforestation and eliminating the usage of CFCs will indubitably lessen the rising dilemma

Despite the best efforts this problem can only be tackled when the common man on road gets aware. The resources are less and as the population grows more pressure is being put on these meager resources.

There are technologies like solar cells and hybrid cars coming that will reduce the severe pressure on the earth but it will take time.
Meanwhile we will have to take the resource conservation approach. The effects of this vast climatic change were best depicted in Hollywood movie ”Day after Tomorrow”

It’s time to go to Mars...it’s calling me!

We should not forget that the industrial revolution that has caused the pollution and the high concentration of greenhouse gases has also given us some good eco-friendly products. We cannot invent a new product without some experiments and some failures.

The question is not the industrial development but it is the high population. Earth now is getting more crowded and the natural resources are not able to cater to this massive population explosion.

We have to wait for the technologies like fuel cells and other eco-friendly fuels that can reduce the burden on our planet. Till now the worst has already been done there is no point crying over spilt milk. All we can do is to pray for a better future.

We cannot fill the Ozone holes that have already been created but with the upcoming tech we can say that any new holes will not be formed.

yes definitely global warming is on boom, leading to green house effects and hence all nature is being destroyed slowly, just like slow food poisoning.

we can take immediate steps to fight this global warming.

Vikas, I think Titan (Saturn’s moon)is a better place to go than Mars... new studies have shown that the atmosphere there is pretty similar if not exactly the same...Check this

Yes , I do agree with Bharat and Vikas, that there is a possibility to inhabit other planet, moon or what ever, but there is one more futuristic plan that NASA is thinking of making it a reality. plan is to protect the Earth from global warming by the massive space sunshade of 20,000 billion space crafts. looks to me is a better idea then moving to some other world.

i totally agree to u kanchan.eventhough the issue is big,it’s not really a matter for the common man.it’s because they have not yet started experiencing the effects.may this article be an inspiring one for atleast us people to realize PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.
